How to Choose Grout Colors That Complement Your Tiles

I’m so excited to be continuing our fabulous flooring/tile journey together—so, let’s talk grout colors! If all of my years as an interior designer have taught me anything—it’s that the details matter. And grout is no minor detail, my friends. In fact, choosing the right grout colors can take your tile installation from ordinary—to absolutely extraordinary! In this post, I’ll do my best to help guide you through the process of selecting grout colors that complement your tiles so that you can brag about the wonderfully cohesive, stunning final result!

Understanding Grout Colors

I know—grout seems like a bit of a boring afterthought. But please believe me--grout is more than just a filler for the gaps between your tiles! It’s a super important factor in the overall look of your tiled space. The right grout color can enhance the beauty of your tiles, while the wrong one can detract from it (we do NOT want that)! So, let’s explore a bit of the basics to give you a solid foundation before choosing the perfect grout color.

What is a Grout Color Chart?

Before you do anything, you’ll want to get your hands on a grout color chart. A grout color chart is a great little tool that displays a range of grout colors. You use the grout color chart by placing it next to your tiles in the actual room where they will be installed. Think of it as one of those color analysis filters that are all over TikTok—kind of. Okay, so it’s only similar in the way that it helps you visualize how different grout colors will look with your tiles (instead of that orange shirt that you should never wear because you’re a “Summer”). It really is helpful and can help you avoid the regret of picking the wrong grout color. You can usually find grout color charts at tile and home improvement stores or online from grout manufacturers (but not on TikTok…yet).

Tips for Choosing Grout Colors

If only an app could do all the work for us, right? But where’s the fun in that?! But don’t worry, here are some tips to help you make the best choice!

Match or Contrast?

One of the first decisions to make is whether you want the grout to match or contrast with your tiles. Matching grout colors to your tiles creates a seamless look, making the tiles the star of the show. This approach works well with intricate or colorful tiles where you want to maintain focus on the tile pattern.

On the other hand, contrasting grout colors can make a bold statement, highlighting the shape and layout of the tiles. This technique is often used with simple, solid-colored tiles to add visual interest and definition.

Consider the Tile Color

The grout color is important, but so is the color of your tile! For white tiles, white or light gray grout can create a clean, classic look. For darker tiles, dark grout can provide a cohesive appearance. If you’re working with multicolored or patterned tiles, neutral grout colors like beige or gray often work best, as they don’t compete with the tiles’ design.

Think About the Room’s Overall Design

Make sure you’re tying it all together--your grout color choice should also complement the overall design of the room. For a modern, minimalist look, stick with grout colors that blend with the tiles. For a more traditional or eclectic style, contrasting grout can add character and charm.

Maintenance and Durability

Yep. Grout color isn’t just about being pretty—it’s also practical. Grout color can impact how easy it is to maintain your tiled space. Lighter grout colors tend to show stains and dirt more easily, requiring more frequent cleaning. Darker grout colors can be more forgiving in high-traffic areas like kitchens and bathrooms.

Custom Grout Colors

We don’t do bland, boring, or ordinary around here! If you have a unique vision for your space, consider custom grout colors. These allow you to match or contrast grout to specific tile colors, giving you complete control over the aesthetic. If you want to stand out, custom grout colors are the perfect option for creating a truly personalized design.

Exploring Popular Tile Grout Colors

White Grout

Think clean and bright! White grout is a classic choice that pairs well with almost any tile color. It’s perfect for spaces where you want a fresh, airy feel. However, keep in mind that white grout can show stains and dirt more easily, so it may require more upkeep.

Gray Grout

Gray doesn’t have to be boring, I promise. Gray grout is incredibly versatile and complements a wide range of tile colors and styles. It’s a popular choice for contemporary and industrial designs, because it provides a subtle contrast that highlights the tiles without overpowering them. Gray grout also tends to hide dirt and stains better than white grout, making it a practical choice for high-traffic areas.

Beige Grout

Beige grout offers a warm, neutral option that works beautifully with natural stone tiles and earthy color palettes. It’s a great choice for creating a cozy, inviting atmosphere in any room. Beige grout can blend seamlessly with so many tile colors to provide a balanced look.

Black Grout

Black is always a bold move! Black grout tends to make a bold statement and is perfect for modern, sleek designs. It creates a striking contrast with lighter tiles, making the tile pattern stand out. It’s also excellent at hiding stains and dirt, making it a low-maintenance option for busy areas like kitchens and bathrooms.

Tips for Testing Grout Colors

While having your grout color chart is super helpful, it’s not just as easy as picking a grout color from a chart. It’s important to see how the colors look in your actual space!

Test in Different Lighting

Lighting can dramatically affect how grout colors appear. Test your grout samples in the room where they’ll be installed and look at them under different lighting conditions (like natural daylight and artificial light). This will give you a better idea of how the grout will look at various times of the day.

Consider the Finished Look

Think about the overall look you’re hoping to achieve. Do you want the grout to blend in and create a seamless look, or do you prefer it to stand out and make a statement? Your choice will influence the grout color you select.

Practical Considerations

Like I mentioned earlier, while aesthetics are important (okay, SUPER important), we do need to consider the practical aspects of grout color. Maintenance and durability are important too, even if they’re not as fun. Here are some factors to keep in mind!

Stain Resistance

Some grout colors, especially lighter ones, can be more prone to staining. If you’re installing tiles in a high-traffic area or a place prone to spills, like a kitchen or bathroom, consider using a darker grout color that can hide stains better.

Cleaning and Sealing

Regardless of the grout color you choose, proper maintenance is essential. Regular cleaning and sealing can help keep your grout looking fresh and new. Sealing the grout creates a protective barrier that repels moisture and stains, extending the life of your grout.

Grout Material

The type of grout material can also impact maintenance. Epoxy grout, for example, is more stain-resistant and durable than traditional cement-based grout. It’s a great option for areas where moisture and stains are a concern.
